Despite their cuddly appearance, hamsters have long, thin, sharp teeth that can pierce a finger that is mistaken for a carrot or for a predator. Harsh disinfectants need never be used to clean hamster homes, except in cases of illness (especially "wet tail" diarrhoea).

Campbells dwarf hamsters are susceptible to hereditary diabetes and any hamster suffering from diabetes should not have high sugar foods, such as fruits and corn. When they are accustomed to being handled and are not startled, they are not inclined to bite and can be placed in the custody of responsible school-age children. They can become very tame if handled frequently.

Some books recommend providing a sand bath for your hamster, but not all hamsters seem to enjoy this. Although diabetes is not so common in some dwarf breeds, sugary commercial treats are best avoided as they are generally unhealthy and fattening. A sand bath can provide hamsters with entertainment and help them groom.
