When they are accustomed to being handled and are not startled, they are not inclined to bite and can be placed in the custody of responsible school-age children. They can become very tame if handled frequently.
Some books recommend providing a sand bath for your hamster, but not all hamsters seem to enjoy this. Although diabetes is not so common in some dwarf breeds, sugary commercial treats are best avoided as they are generally unhealthy and fattening. A sand bath can provide hamsters with entertainment and help them groom.
